It's of a long time ago, this memory... 20 years, perhaps. Or even more.
Anyway, near my town there was a great wide field, where wild flowers in all kinds of colors bloomed prettily throughout the year, and the grass was always green.
I loved to play there, sometimes with my baseball bat and a battered little ball, sometimes with my dog and a brightly colored Frisbee; other times I simply went there to run and roll in the sea of green under the big fiery sun by myself.
And of course, there were times when I went with him. In fact, we went there together many times, and at that age, our favorite past-time had been chasing after cute little butterflies that danced in the air and trying with all our might to catch one.
The memory is filled with laughter, laughter, and laughter. Laugher of mine. Laughter of his. Even to this day, I can still remember the silvery jingle of his childish giggles and the way his face lit with the sweetest of smiles.
Only one year younger than me, he often seemed to me a shy, little kitten that very much needed the protection of a parent.
And sometimes I couldn't help but filled in that particular
role.
Once, when we sat in the shadow of a great tree in a hot sunny day, a small butterfly that had wings of gold flew by his nose.
He yelped in surprise. I jumped after that cute little creature immediately.
It escaped my palms by barely an inch.
I rose up and ran after it. "Ken-chan, wait!" He was calling my name, but I figured I shouldn't miss the dance of catching that little thing. And surely he would run to join me, wouldn't he? So I didn't bother to turn back but kept on chasing.
"Ah!" Suddenly I heard a cry.
When I whirled around I found he had somehow tripped and fallen, and was now sitting on the earth with his head bowed. Tiny whimpering noises I could hear as well.
With dismay I realized that the butterfly had fled to wherever it had been trying to go to; but I soon forgot about it as I ran to his side.
"Are you okay?"
"Ken-chan..." He looked up with big eyes like those of my puppy. "...It hurts." He meant the small scratch on his right knee. Tears welled up in his eyes.
He cried easily.
I kneeled down and examined the reddened spot. "Does it hurt real bad?"
"Yeah." He sniffled. "And it's all your fault."
"No, it's not," I replied. "It's because you're a careless baby."
"Am not!" He protested in his shaky voice, and I laughed. He wiped his tears that were showing no sign of ever stop flowing, his lips quivered.
I bent down and blew on that little scratch several times.
"There, now. Better?"
He nodded.
Satisfied, I stood up, offering my hand to him. He took it and rose up as well. Now his fair-skinned face burned faintly with embarrassment.
I led him back to our tree. "You're such a crybaby."
"...Am not."

"Ken-chan?"
Ken lifts his head and sees Tetsu coming out of the shower, clad in a simple T-shirt and a pair of silk pajama pants, regarding him with a curious expression. Half-dry blond hair framed his face in disarray, baggy pants making him appear even smaller. Ken thinks Tetsu looks very cuddly tonight.
"You're so quiet. What is it?"
"Nothing. Just thinking about a childhood friend who was a klutz and a crybaby and has grown to become my fearless band leader and kawaii little lover."
Tetsu blushes slightly. He throws himself down to the double bed on which Ken is casually lying, bounces a little, and turns to look at Ken indignantly. "I was not a klutz! Nor a crybaby!"
"You still are," Ken tells him with a grin. Then he gathers his lover into his arms and holds him against himself. Tetsu smells nice.
"Oh, that's /so/ not true!" The small bassist protests, struggling and pounding on his shoulders.
Ken grins again lovingly and plants a light kiss on Tetsu's smooth forehead. "It's all right, Tet-chan, because you're my klutz. And I don't mind crybabies."
That quiets Tetsu down. Ken can almost feel his lover blush.
They hold for a long moment, during which Ken becomes increasingly content with the blissfulness of having Tetsu in his arms. It's always amazing to feel how much he loves that little blond-head.
Finally Tetsu twists a little in his embrace to look out of the window.
"Ne, Ken-chan."
"Hmmm?"
Tetsu turns the brown gazes to him, smiling. "It looks nice tonight. Let's go to the balcony. I want to breathe some fresh air."
Ken groans. "Must we?" He wants to do nothing but stay here on the nice, comfortable bed with his lover's warm presence snuggled up against him.
"Oh, come on. Just for a short while, okay?" Tetsu gently breaks out of his arms and tugs at them with the best puppy-dog eyes he can master.
Ken decides that he's not even going to try resisting.
He has learned over the years that he can never, ever turn down Tetsu's
requests.
It is indeed a very beautiful night. The full moon hangs high, and somehow the sky is lit with more twinkling stars than usual. And underneath it the City of Tokyo lies in its glory like a shining, bright jewel.
Tetsu takes in a deep breath, grinning. "It's so nice, ne?"
"Aa," Ken agrees, though he's paying most of his attention on the smaller man beside him.
The breeze is cool, and Tetsu unconsciously moves closer to his lover, seeking his warmth without even realizing it.
Ken pulls him against himself protectively. "Are you cold?"
"...No."
"You're shivering."
"Am not."
Ken lifts an eyebrow. "Yes, you are. Wait here, I'll go get you a jacket."
"No." Much to his surprise, Tetsu grabs his hand, stopping him from turning. "It's all right, Ken-chan. We'll just be here for a few minutes, ne. I'll be okay."
Ken lets out a sigh and looks at Tetsu with a resigned but fond little smile. He puts out his arms, and the little bassist comes into his embrace willingly. "I spoil you, Tetsu." He looks down at the smaller man with a mock scowl.
"That's because you love me, right?" Tetsu grins up at him.
Ken blinks, and shakes his head helplessly. He picks up Tetsu's hands and proceeds to rub them with his larger ones.
"Baka na. Your hands are /freezing/."
"But your hands are warm." Tetsu leans against him almost dreamily, smiling contently as he speaks. "Ken-chan's hands are always warm," he says out loud as if making a very important statement, looking up at Ken with sparkling eyes.
The unhidden adoration in those beautiful depths almost makes Ken's heart melt with overwhelming happiness. He lowers his head and covers Tetsu's pink lips with his own.
"Ken...Ken-chan! Wait...Mmph-"
Tetsu's protests are conveniently ignored.
When they finally part, Tetsu is half-panting and glaring accusingly, though his flushed cheeks and kiss-reddened lips make him seem considerably less threatening. "What if people saw us, baka!"
"Then they'd know how much I love you, wouldn't they?"
Tetsu blushes even redder. "Baka!"
"You're cute when you're angry, Tetsu."
"No, I'm not."
Ken laughs. "If you say so. Come one, let's get back inside." He grabs Tetsu's right hand and starts leading him back towards the room.
"So fast? Why? We've only been here for no more than ten minutes."
"So that I can kiss you all I want without having to worry about being seen by other people."
He doesn't think Tetsu's face can get any redder. "...Ken-chan
no hentai." His flustered lover mutters, but follows him anyway.
-------------------
Later that night, when he is sleeping comfortably with Tetsu cuddled within his arms, Ken dreams of a great, wide field of endless sea of wild flowers and rolling green grass.
The sun is fiery in the blue sky. In the shadow of a giant tree there are two little boys, side by side, leaning on the trunk, resting. Their faces are flushed from chasing butterflies; their breaths come in tiny pants as they try to recover their energy. But they are giggling, and their eyes are shining with the happiness and the bond that they share with nobody else but themselves.
One of them is saying to the other, "Ne, Ken-chan?"
"Yeah?"
"Did you know that we have to marry someone when we grow up?"
"Yeah."
"How did you know?"
"Everybody knows, baka."
"Mom said I won't have to marry my sisters."
"Were you worried about that?"
"Yeah."
"Ha ha ha ha..."
"What's so funny?"
"You're so silly, Tetsu."
"Am not."
"Ha ha... So, who do you wanna marry, then?"
"Mmmm...Ken-chan."
"Eh? Me?"
"I can't?"
"I don't know."
"How about you, Ken-chan? Who're you gonna marry?"
"Well, if you're gonna marry me, I'll marry you, too."
"Really?"
"Sure."
"Yatta! You promise?"
"Promise."
