Part 32

---------

Levin closed his eyes tight resignedly when his body hit the waves. The pain the contact caused was so overpowering, he welcomed almost eagerly the unconsciousness that followed.

And then everything was just pitch black.

He had always thought that 'death' meant 'nothingness.' And indeed he had fully expected himself to die when Yukihiro lashed out at him and threw him out without mercy into the deep growling sea that was the taller demon's mother.

But he was now floating, between the currents, sinking and surfacing, here and there. He felt so /comfortable/, too. The icy water touching and enveloping his body was like great caressing hands. And there was a thread of...something... entering his blank mind. He was hearing a distinctive voice...

/Poor thing, poor thing.../ the voice cooed.

He opened his eyes with difficulty. He saw nothing but darkness, not even his own body. "Who...?"

/I am the Mother of all creatures. Surely you know me.../

"Aa..."

/My little darkling, hear me. You will help me./

"I can't. I'm dead." Levin sank deeper still into the water.

The sea was rumbling thunderously. /You amuse me, little darkling. You live. I am to let you live./

"...Why? Your very own son wants me dead."

/Ah, I have taught him well, haven't I./

"I suppose you rather have," Levin replied dryly.

/You are so bitter. But I don't blame you. I will have you alive, if you agree to help me./

"How can I help you, my mistress," he said, "when I'm only, as you said, a mere 'little darkling'?"

/Listen to me before you mock, my dear. There is one being whom I long to have in my arms again. He is the most precious thing I have ever wanted... Yet, my son is all but ruining my plans.../

Levin remained silent, strangely detached of emotions. Wasn't he the one who was trying to hurt those two, the human and the Star, only a few days ago? But now he couldn't care less...

The voice was echoing in his head. /Is that so? How about the mortal whom you so devotedly adore? Do you not care about him anymore?/

This startled the small man. "You mean..."

/Yes. And he is dying./

Levin felt something in him quicken. And great terror he'd never known gripped him. "How can he...? No, no. Die isn't... can't be..."

/I tell the truth, Levin my dear. The sole reason he isn't dead already is because I am not letting him. Now, are you interested in helping me?/

"But how can I help you? My power doesn't rival Yukihiro's..." Levin asked, bitter.

/You need not to confront him. If you be careful, he would not know of your existence, I will make sure of that./

"Then... what is it that you want me to-"

The endless voice was ghostly as it whispered into Levin's ears: /Destroy the Star. With every bit of your strength, destroy the Star. Only then will my precious doll return to me. Destroy the Star./

Levin opened his eyes. The moonless night sky greeted him. He was floating in the great cradle of the sea. Every fiber of his being ached, and the hollow yet rich voice of the Mother still rang in his mind.

Destroy the Star.

Yes.

And then, suddenly remembering, he desperately began to seek for Die, Die whom he...loved.

At last, he saw the slender body of the red-haired man, painfully pale and lifeless, carried by the waves that splashed against each other. Levin struggled to move to him, and finally gathered Die into his arms.

The waves carried them to the shore.

"Die-kun? Die-kun?" Levin could feel power restoring bit by bit back into his body, but right now he thought about nothing but the beautiful human in his arms. He carefully eased Die onto his back on the sandy beach. "Die-kun..."

For the first time of his life, he hated himself for his incapability on the healing magics, for being a demon that he was, for he was forbidden to wield such White Magic. Frowning deeply, Levin saw with faintest relief that Die was still breathing.

Suddenly, Die's body spasmed, and he began to cough violently.

"Die-kun!"

Having coughed out the water in his lungs, Die opened his eyes tiredly, focusing with difficulty on Levin. When he spoke, his voice was hoarse. "Le...Levin-chan? Are you...are you okay? I saw Yukki-that bastard-push you off the...the cliff! And I thought you'd die for sure! That you'd be lost to me forever... Oh God..." Die held his head in his arms as though in great agony.

Levin smiled lovingly: A real, hearty smile, all viciousness for a moment forgotten. And he embraced the redheaded young man to himself, whispering soothingly, "It's all right, it's all right, Die-kun. Everything's fine now..." he paused, and then: "I have one more job to fulfill. After that, we can be with each other forever."
